Avoiding gluten in your diet? We have a dedicated Gluten-Free Zone in our residential dining room where all selections in this area are gluten-free. They have been specially prepared in a gluten-free area of our kitchen. To see our daily menu offerings at this station, visit our Locations & Menus page.


*Even foods commonly prepared without gluten containing ingredients may not be ‘gluten-free’. Our recipes are prepared in open kitchens where cross-contact is possible and where ingredient substitutions are sometimes made. If you have celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity please notify your on-site manager to request an individually prepared ‘gluten-free’ selection.

Allergen-Friendly

The Worry Free Zone, our Allergen-Friendly and Gluten Free station, was developed to make life and eating easier for those with allergies and intolerances. The recipes and ingredients have been specially selected by our chefs and registered dietitian to exclude gluten, peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish. **Students with allergies to other foods may request specially-prepared meals to accommodate their special diet once they have registered with the Disability Resource Center.**

Daily Menu Options

The Worry Free Zone serves a different entrée selection and offers deli sandwiches, hamburgers, turkey burgers, and pizza upon request during lunch and dinner at both restaurants. The station also offers Halal lamb burgers. Please note that in order to request a gluten-free pizza customers have to obtain a Food Allergen Alert card from our registered dietitian diningdietitian@lsv.uky.edu.

Created for You

All students can partake from this station, but it was especially created for students with food allergies and intolerances. In order to keep this area safe, we ask that our guests do not bring outside food, plates, cups, utensils, or take-out containers into this area.

Employee Training for Food Safety

Chefs and Cooks in the Worry Free Zone have received comprehensive food safety training. Continuous education is paramount: daily refreshers on the importance of food safety are executed and facilitated training sessions are held throughout the semester. 

Our chefs that work at the Worry Free Zone stations have received training from either AllerTrain U: Allergen and Gluten Free Service Certified Training or Gluten-Free Resource Education Awareness Training.  

Students with allergies and intolerances can be confident that we have trained our staff and execute re-trainings in pursuit of continuous improvement. We work together as a team to ensure that all students are well-nourished, using our products and brands that we purchase, without exception. This approach maintains that all food safety policies and requirements can be managed and executed.

Food safety is our number one priority for students with food allergies. Our entire philosophy is built from the foundation of Safety First; and our goal is to provide students with the tools that they need to be active in the management of their food allergy. In this manner, we can provide a safe and supportive transition into college life.

Lauren McKnight-Ford

Meet our registered dietitian, Lauren McKnight-Ford, RDN, LD

Lauren is a graduate of Wayne State University and Eastern Michigan University. She has completed extensive training on food allergens and celiac disease with certifications in training through Beyond Celiac, AllerTrain, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  She joined the UK Dining team in July of 2014 where she has worked to provide the campus community with healthier alternatives. Each semester health and wellness events are held in order to provide the education and information necessary to make smart food choices and spread awareness related to wellness. She believes that students’ academic success is closely linked to good nutrition and their overall well-being.

Lauren provides support to students with healthful eating habits on campus, weight management, managing food allergies, celiac disease and food intolerances, and vegan and vegetarian nutrition.
